Have you ever shared photos of your lunch with someone on Instagram, only to find out they’ve seen it? Even worse, have you ever had to wait for the other person to read the caption, only to find out they never did? If you want to turn off read receipts on Instagram and prevent people from seeing when you’ve seen their messages, this guide will walk you through how.

What are read receipts?

When you’re scrolling through your feed and see a blue or white checkmark next to someone’s name, it means that they have seen your story. When you tap the name of the person who liked your post, the window will either say They’ve seen this or They haven’t seen this. If they have already seen your post, then it means that they liked it or commented on it. This is what we call a read receipt.

There are some people who want to keep their stories more private and don’t want anyone to know when they’ve seen them. In order to turn off read receipts on Instagram, go into your Settings app on iOS. Scroll down until you find the Services menu and tap it. Underneath App Store, there should be an option for In-App Purchases.

Tap into In-App Purchases and scroll down until you find Send Read Receipts from Notification Center. You’ll need to toggle off Allow Notifications from Notification Center. The notification center lets apps show notifications in the top left corner of your screen, which includes alerts about new messages or posts that someone has seen. Turning off these notifications will stop sending these alerts to people with whom you share your stories!

Why they’re bad?

Read receipts are a little annoyance that shows up in your chat and lets people know when you’ve read their messages. They might not seem like a big deal at first, but they can be a huge problem if you’re dealing with sensitive information or need to keep certain conversations private.

But don’t worry, there’s an easy way to turn them off! Just follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Select Messages.
  3. Tap the toggle next to Send Read Receptions.

Open your profile, tap the three lines in the top left corner, and then tap Settings. Scroll down and find the Turn off read receipts option. Toggle it to On. This will prevent people from seeing when you’ve read their message. If they don’t see a blue double-check mark, they’ll think that you didn’t open their last message. You can also choose to only send them to read receipts for certain chats. To do this, open the chat where you want to turn off read receipts and tap Details below the text box. Next tap Edit Read Receipts and select Off or No Read Receipts.

What if I don’t want to?

If you don’t want your followers to know that you have read their messages, there’s a way. You can turn off the read receipts in your settings. To do this, head to your profile and click the gear icon at the top right of the screen. This will take you into your account settings where you’ll be able to adjust a few options. You’ll see an option that says show when I’m typing. If you uncheck this box, it means people won’t know if you’ve read their messages or not- although they’ll still be able to see when they’ve sent them! If you do want people to know when you’ve seen what they wrote, just check the box again.
